A. What is a Raft Foundation? Work, Modern Construction Use & Technical Characteristics

A raft foundation, also known as a mat foundation or floating foundation, is a reinforced concrete (RCC) slab that extends across the entire footprint of a building. Instead of supporting individual columns or walls with separate footings, it acts as a single continuous foundation that carries and distributes the load of the entire structure over a large ground area.

A raft foundation works by spreading the total structural load across its entire surface area rather than concentrating it at specific points. This wider load distribution reduces the pressure exerted on the soil and helps control settlement. By creating a continuous support system beneath the structure, the foundation minimizes differential settlement and provides greater stability for the building.

Raft foundations are widely used in modern construction because they provide a reliable solution for sites with weak, compressible, or variable soil conditions. They help prevent cracks, uneven floors, and structural damage caused by uneven settlement. Raft foundations are also commonly selected when columns and walls are closely spaced, making separate footings impractical or uneconomical.

A raft foundation is classified as a shallow foundation under IS 2950 (Part I): 1981. It consists of a reinforced concrete slab that supports multiple structural elements on a single foundation system. Key technical characteristics include uniform load distribution, reduced unit soil pressure, improved settlement control, and suitability for soils with relatively low bearing capacities, typically below 100–150 kN/m². These characteristics make raft foundations an efficient and stable foundation option for a wide range of residential, commercial, and industrial structures.
